Book Review: Secret Diamond Sisters by Michelle Madow

Release Date: February 25th, 2014
Read: April 21st-24th, 2014
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Series: The Secret Diamond Sisters, #1
Format: Paperback, 382 pages
Source: Won

Description from GoodReads:

   Savannah. Courtney. Peyton.

The three sisters grew up not knowing their father and not quite catching a break. But it looks like their luck is about to change when they find out the secret identity of their long-lost dad—a billionaire Las Vegas hotel owner who wants them to come live in a gorgeous penthouse hotel suite. Suddenly the Strip's most exclusive clubs are all-access, and with an unlimited credit card each, it should be easier than ever to fit right in. But in a town full of secrets and illusion, fitting in is nothing compared to finding out the truth about their past.

Review:

Some secrets grow to big to keep.
To most people finding out that you have a billionaire father would be quite a shocker, mostly because he's a billionaire, but not in this case. Savannah, Courtney and Peyton Diamond could care less about their father. When the situation changed the girls were forced to make a decision, either embrace Vegas and the unlimited amount of money thats goes with it or fight it and hope for the best.
The book is written in four different characters points of view, Savannah, Courtney, Peyton Diamond and Madison Lockhart. Each character having a totally different unique way of seeing the world. Courtney with her mature and responsible ways were my favourite out of the four. Don't get me wrong the others are amazing as well! Savannah with her carefree ways, Peyton's sass, then there's Madison. I couldn't stand her ugh. I found her a spoiled brat who had to be the centre of attention because of her parent issues. So being in her head was sort of painful aha.
Out of the sisters though I think Savannah had the right idea, the girls had barely enough money to live off of in their old lives so spending a few hundred dollars couldn't hurt. To be honest I would have probably gone straight to the closest/biggest bookstore and bought all of my favourite books and maybe more.
One thing that would continuously bug me throughout the novel was the teenagers ages. I am currently Courtney's age, and no matter what the situation is I would never drink, purposely go into bars, that sort of thing. The relationships were my biggest issue though. I would be a year older than Savannah, I feel like she wasn't mature enough for her age. Especially when it came to that one scene with Damien, you would never see me going that far in a relationship at that age. Heck you probably wouldn't see me going that far now. Even though it was Michelle's choice, I feel like the girls ages should have been different. As in they should have been older by at least 2 years.
After this novel I will definitely be visiting Vegas when I turn twenty-one.
I can't wait to read Diamonds in the Rough, ( The sequel to Secret Diamond Sisters) when it releases October 28th, 2014.
Michelle has also written the Transcend Time Saga, which includes Remembrance, Vengenace and Timeless.

Book Review: The Murder Complex by Lindsay Cummings

Release Date: June 10th, 2014
Read: April 13-16th, 2014
Publisher: Greenwillow Books
Series: The Murder Complex #1
Format: ARC Paperback, 416 pages
Source: Author in exchange for an honest review/ book pendants

Description from GoodReads:

Meadow Woodson, a fifteen-year-old girl who has been trained by her father to fight, to kill, and to survive in any situation, lives with her family on a houseboat in Florida. The state is controlled by The Murder Complex, an organization that tracks the population with precision.

The plot starts to thicken when Meadow meets Zephyr James, who is—although he doesn’t know it—one of the MC’s programmed assassins. Is their meeting a coincidence? Destiny? Or part of a terrifying strategy? And will Zephyr keep Meadow from discovering the haunting truth about her family?

Review:

Count to three. Relax your mind. Now survive.
I really wanted to like The Murder Complex, but in the end I think I over hyped myself for this book. The comparisons I saw everywhere didn't help either. " It's the next Hunger Games/ Divergent!" The book really DID remind me of Divergent, a little to much if you ask me. The being trained to fight, a group that thinks they are worth more then other people, the trains and finally the murder complex. In the end I just didn't enjoy myself reading it as much as I hoped I would.
The beginning of the book jumped right into everything. You do not have to wait a single second for the suspense and action to happen. The characters all have their own purpose in their own worlds, but none of them are content there. Each one of them wants something more from their lives, you could continuously feel that vibe through out the book. Especially Meadow, one of the main characters in the book. In every family there is that one person who would do anything for their family and only wants what's best for them. That person is Meadow, because of her families situation she would do anything for Peri. Her sister. I found this admirable and gratifying. Most of the time we say that we'd do anything for family, but when it comes down it it we become cowards. The need to live becomes too strong and over powers the need to protect. This stood out the most for me in the book.
The Murder Complex is the first novel Lindsay Cummings has written and published, you can find her prequel for The Murder Complex, The Fear Trial out for ebooks on May 27th, 2014 and her second series The Balance Keepers in stores September 23rd, 2014.

Book Review: The Liberator by Victoria Scott

Release Date: August 27th, 2013
Read: August 19th, 2013
Publisher: Entangled Teen
Series: Dante Walker # 2
Format: E-ARC, 352 pages
Source: Author in exchange for review/book pendants

Description from GoodReads:

   Bad boy, meet bad girl.

Dante has a shiny new cuff wrapped around his ankle, and he doesn’t like that mess one bit. His new accessory comes straight from Big Guy himself and marks the former demon as a liberator. Despite his gritty past and bad boy ways, Dante Walker has been granted a second chance.

When Dante is given his first mission as a liberator to save the soul of seventeen-year-old Aspen, he knows he’s got this. But Aspen reminds him of the rebellious life he used to live and is making it difficult to resist sinful temptations. Though Dante is committed to living clean for his girlfriend Charlie, this dude’s been a playboy for far too long…and old demons die hard.

With Charlie becoming the girl she was never able to be pre-makeover and Aspen showing him how delicious it feels to embrace his inner beast, Dante will have to go somewhere he never thought he’d return to in order to accomplish the impossible: save the girl he’s been assigned to, and keep the girl he loves.

Review:

Contains Spoilers:

   Pow
First of all I have to say I really enjoyed this work of art. ( A.K.A the book) Dante's bad ass comments can make any boring moment AMAZING, and I love Victoria for that. When someone would say "His must be very nervous." Victoria would spice it up and say "His tampon must be killing him." Which would make us laugh every time, and remind us why Dante Walker is a must read series. But there are many more reasons to read The Liberator. The characters are one of them.
In The Collector we fell in love with Dante and Charlie, Max and Red (Varley). In The Liberator we fell in love with Aspen and Blue, (Yes Blue has returned from the dead! Hallelujah! Now a Liberator if you can believe it.) and maybe even Kraven and Annabelle. I swear I saw a little something there. But with Charlie and Dante's relationship growing, so did the problems they faced. Learning about the Sirens, the scrolls, Gram dying and the war. Swearing to return Charlie's soul, Dante travelled to Hell with a companion. But not Charlie, with Aspen. I felt bad when Charlie had a complete freak out. But I think Dante did the right thing. I was totally shocked to hear Aspen was going to stay in hell for Charlie's soul. I was even more shocked to find out that Charlie AND Aspen were gonna end the war. A Savour and a Soldier. In the end it makes sense though, both girls can read the scrolls and both have some sort of power. Charlie with making people feel giving, Aspen with her unbelievable fighting skills. With Victorias wicked sense of humour and Dante's bad ass attitude together they created a world full of awesome sauce.
The Liberator is a sure keeper and will have you hiding in your closet with the feels until the third and last Dante Walker book is out on the selves. The Warrior, the last and final book in the Dante Walker Trilogy is out on shelves May 6th, 2014.

(Please note I wrote this review before I started my blog, so it's a bit unprofessional.)

  EXCERPT:

I didn’t recognize the name on the street sign. Nothing about the rural road looked familiar or friendly. Tall, imposing trees and overgrown weeds choked the front of the dilapidated home. Windows were boarded up. There was a gaping hole where the front door had been. I shivered, wanting to be far away from here…wherever here was. Walking felt harder than it should be, and I stumbled off the chilly asphalt, wincing as sharp gravel dug into my feet. My bare feet? I stopped and looked down. Chipped pink nail polish peeked through the dirt…and blood. Mud caked the legs of my pants, leaving the hems stiff. It made sense, seeing as how I wasn’t wearing any shoes, but the blood…I didn’t understand why there was blood staining the knees of my jeans. My vision clouded and dulled, as if a gray film had been dropped over my eyes. As I stared at the weathered asphalt under my feet, large and smooth rocks replaced the tiny stones. Something dark and oily seeped over the rocks, slipping through the cracks. Sucking in a sharp gasp, I blinked and the image was gone. Hands trembling, I raised them. They were also covered with dirt and scratches. My nails were broken, bloodied. A silver ring wrapped, encased in soil, around my thumb. Air froze in my chest as my gaze crawled over my arms. The sleeves of my sweater were torn, revealing pale flesh covered in bruises and gashes. My legs started to shake as I swayed forward. I tried to remember how this had happened, but my head was empty—a black void where nothing existed. A car drove by, coasting to a stop a few feet in front of me. Somewhere in the trenches of my subconscious, I recognized the flashing red and blue lights as a source of safety. Elegantly scrawled along the black-and-gray side of the cruiser were the words ADAMS COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT. Adams County? A flash of familiarity came and went. The driver’s door opened, and a deputy stepped out. He said something into the radio on his shoulder before he looked at me. “Miss?” He started around the cruiser, taking tentative steps. He looked young for a deputy. Barely out of high school and able to carry a gun seemed wrong somehow. Was I in high school? I didn’t know. “We’ve received some calls into dispatch concerning you,” he said gently. “Are you okay?” I tried to respond, but only a hoarse squeak came out. Clearing my throat, I winced as the motion scratched and pulled. “I…I don’t know.” “Okay.” The deputy held up his hands as he approached me, as if I were a skittish deer about to bolt. “My name is Deputy Rhode. I’m here to help you. Do you know what you’re doing out here?” “No.” Knots formed in my belly. I didn’t even know where here was. His smile strained. “What’s your name?” My name? Everyone knew their name, but as I stared at the deputy, I couldn’t answer his question. The knots started twisting more. “I don’t…I don’t know what my name is.” He blinked, and the smile was completely gone. “You don’t remember anything?” I tried again, concentrating on the empty space between my ears. That was how it felt. And I knew that wasn’t good. My eyes started to tear up. “Miss, it’s okay. We’ll get you taken care of.” He reached out, lightly taking hold of my arm. “We’ll get this sorted.” Deputy Rhode led me around the back of his cruiser. I didn’t want to sit behind the Plexiglas, because I knew that wasn’t good. Only bad people sat behind the glass in police cruisers. I wanted to object, but before I could say anything, he settled me into the seat and wrapped a coarse blanket around my shoulders. Before he locked me in the bad part of the car, he knelt and smiled reassuringly. “Everything’s going to be okay.” But I knew he was lying, trying to make me feel better. It didn’t work. How could everything be okay when I didn’t know my own name?

  ABOUT DON’T LOOK BACK:

Samantha is a stranger in her own life. Until the night she disappeared with her best friend, Cassie, everyone said Sam had it all—popularity, wealth, and a dream boyfriend. Sam has resurfaced, but she has no recollection of who she was or what happened to her that night. As she tries to piece together her life from before, she realizes it's one she no longer wants any part of. The old Sam took "mean girl" to a whole new level, and it's clear she and Cassie were more like best enemies. Sam is pretty sure that losing her memories is like winning the lottery. She's getting a second chance at being a better daughter, sister, and friend, and she's falling hard for Carson Ortiz, a boy who has always looked out for her—even if the old Sam treated him like trash. But Cassie is still missing, and the facts about what happened to her that night isn't just buried deep inside of Sam's memory—someone else knows, someone who wants to make sure Sam stays quiet. All Sam wants is the truth, and if she can unlock her clouded memories of that fateful night, she can finally move on. But what if not remembering is the only thing keeping Sam alive?

“This engrossing thriller packs a heady atmospheric punch with plenty of theatrical scares,” Kirkus Reviews “Armentrout has written another winner. From the first page to the last, she builds both terror and confusion to the point where readers will be hooked and on the edge of their seat. This standalone contains all of Armentrout’s usual trademarks– a strong and determined heroine, witty comments and hot guys–but she adds in an extra layer by ratcheting up the suspense to the highest degree and follows it up with an ending no one will see coming.”

Book Review: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer Michelle Hodkin

Release Date: September 27th, 2011
Read: April 9-13th, 2014
Publishing: Simon & Shuster Children's Publishing
Series: Mara Dyer #1
Format:Hardcover, 452 pages
Source: Winnipeg Public Library

Description from GoodReads:

Mara Dyer doesn’t think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.

   It can.

She believes there must be more to the accident she can’t remember that killed her friends and left her mysteriously unharmed.
There is.

She doesn’t believe that after everything she’s been through, she can fall in love.

   She’s wrong.

Review:

Contains Spoliers:

And I could see it with stunning clarity.
For months before I got myself a copy of this book, this series was all I saw on Tumblr. Quotes, pictures, gifs and I have to admit I sort of became obsessed with the covers. But the book itself was completely unique as well. To loose your best friend and boyfriend all on one night is really rather tragic, but to have no memory of it? How can one person kept their sanity?
One of the things that keep coming back to the surface of the novel was the fact that Mara had lost a huge part of herself already by loosing not just her friends, but her memories as well but she was experiencing hallucinations. Thinking about this experience gives me chills, many people go through sorts of experiences that are similar to this in our world, Mara thought she was insane or slowly becoming it. What if this is what all those people feel? Reading this book we see a bit into the life of someone this has occurred too. I understand people in our world don't tend to have powers that can kill people whichever way that evil part of you desires but otherwise the life Mara lived was quite haunting.
Even though we never met Rachel I felt like she would have been a terrible friend, no matter what Mara said about her. Best friends are supposed to know you better then you know yourself, the fact that Mara had told her multiple times she didn't want to stay at the Asylum over night would have been a big red sign. In the end Mara was fighting to keep her friend exactly that her friend, there shouldn't have been any fighting. Rachel was never truly Mara's friend if she couldn't care about her wishes.
Mara having powers also set off a flag for me.With Mara having powers I felt as if at any moment she would pull a Carrie on us and attack Anna or Aiden. Mara at times could be a bit unstable so it would make sense wouldn't it? Either way I seriously think some magic voodoo going on in this book.
The Evolution of Mara Dyer is the sequel to this unpredictable read, which I will have my hands on as soon as I possibly can! The final book in the Mara Dyer trilogy, The Retribution of Mara Dyer releases on November 4th, 2014.

Review:

Darkness never dies
Mmmmmmm Nikolai. In this sequel to Shadow and Bone I found myself in the same prodicument as I did in the first novel. There was just too much stuff to wrap my head around. With all the different Grisha jobs, the different powers and finally the different language. I would always find myself with a headache and couldn't enjoy myself.  Even with the headache I very much enjoyed Prince Nikolai, seriously he's my favourite. He's so full of a deeper knowledge, I don't really know what to call it but what he says just always gets to me, and his sass! I can't get enough of it.
Even though I found that this book was a little too much for me personally to handle and never deeply understood the first two novels in the series I will definitely give the final book in the series, Ruin and Rising a try because seriously? This series really does deserve it.
Ruin and Rising releases June 17th, 2014 and is the final book in The Grisha Trilogy.

I can't believe it's already been a year<3 Sadly the final book in the Dante Walker trilogy will be released May 6th, 2014, it'll be sad to see him and the gang go..

BUT HAVE NO FEAR!!

May is still a month away, so till that dreadful day I have some exclusive content for you!! I have for you a letter from Dante Walker!

"
Working for the devil turns you into something unfixable. It makes you a demon, forevermore. It teaches you to feel anger before anything else, and to fight dirty for those things you believe yours. But I don’t work for the devil anymore. I work for the good guys, even if I don’t act like one. My job now is to protect my girlfriend from my former boss, and to rescue my friend from hell.
No, I don’t work for the devil any longer. But I am still the man he made me. I am still angry, and volatile, and dangerous. I don’t like the things he’s done, and I’m not about to sit back quietly. After all, he taught me better than that. He loved me with the kindness of a serrated blade, and fed me from a spoon dipped in terror.
He made me into a monster.
But I will bite the hand that fed me.

Dante Walker "

Sealing souls is nothing personal. Dante’s an equal-opportunity collector and doesn't want it any other way. But he’ll have to adjust, because Boss Man has given him a new assignment:

Collect Charlie Cooper’s soul within ten days.

Dante doesn't know why Boss Man wants Charlie, nor does he care. This assignment means only one thing to him, and that’s a permanent ticket out of hell. But after Dante meets the quirky Nerd Alert chick he’s come to collect, he realizes this assignment will test his abilities as a collector…and uncover emotions deeply buried.
